There is a sports car and then there is a sports car. The Maserati is the latter. From its early days of creation the brand has been marketed and accepted as a unique luxury sports car on the market. Italian in roots, the company has seen many forms of ownership in its long history. The company was created in 1914 by a group of brothers with the last name Maserati. The Maserati coupe has always been one of the finer vehicles available and the price reflects this, making it a vehicle that is owned by fewer than a traditional sports car might be.

Those early days did not last long as the company changed hands in 1937. There would be several more changes of hands along the road. It wasn't until 1968 when Citroen took over the car brand that it became as mass produced as it is today. Two owners later, the company would be turned over to Fiat in 1993. It would then go on to merge with Ferrari, one of its main competitors, and then back to the Fiat Auto Group where it partnered with Alfa Romeo. Throughout these transitions there were a number of vehicles, including the Maserati coupe styles, created and produced.

The most well known, and still current, Maserati coupe is the GranTurismo. The two-door sports car was introduced to potential buyers in 2007 with a V8 engine and the power to back up the Maserati name. Now there are several versions of the GranTurismo including the S, MC, S Automatic, MC Sport Line, MC Stradale and Sport. Each is distinguished by characteristics that set it apart from the other models. Some have been around since the beginning of the GranTurismo while others have only been introduced as recently as 2012.

The features included with each Maserati coupe, as well as things like seating and wheel choices, are helpful in determining which model it is. For instance. The GranTurismo itself is a 2+2 version while the Maserati MC Stradale is a two seater only. The sport is exactly as it proclaims, offering a sportier design and wheel base than the traditional model. The GranTurismo S began production in 2008 and was discontinued for 2012 to be replaced by the Sport. The S Automatic was also discontinued even though it was the only model that came with a standard six speed automatic.

Though the GranTurismo is the current model of Maserati coupe, it is not the only one crafted in the history of the company. As an Italian based luxury sports car company, designing a coupe is only natural. Like most luxury vehicles, the Maserati features a host of standard features that may not even be an option on a traditional vehicle. Buyers pay for that luxury with the GranTurismo easily going over $100,000 in price. Those that purchase a Maserati do so for status as much as appreciation of the vehicle itself.
