The 2012 Dodge Avenger Sedan shared almost every design and engineering feature with the Chrysler Sebring, however it was not included in the re-engineering that transformed the Sebring into the new Chrysler 200 sedan. Some significant upgrades have resulted in a far superior version of this lower-priced choice in the mid-size sedan market, giving it some hope of a possible comeback. The body generally looks the same, but the drivetrain is new, as is the suspension and the interior design. However, this model doesn't differentiate itself in any meaningful way, making it a tough sell in a crowded market.

The base trim on the Dodge Avenger Sedan includes a 2.4 liter I-4 engine that really should be avoided at all costs, though you are likely to see it the next time you rent a car. The I-4 miles per gallon is unimpressive at 21 city and 30 highway, and doesn't make up for the difficulty in achieving merging and passing speeds, along with excessive noise and constant vibration when the car really gets going. Opt instead for the 3.6 liter V-6, which also has upgraded suspension, for a better balance between power, fuel economy, and handling. That is not to say that the V-6 handling is better than the competition, as other makes offer tighter, more accurate, and more responsive steering. However, it does have Best-in-Class V-6 Power (283 horsepower) and Best-in-Class V-6 Highway Fuel Economy so there are some excellent reasons to include the Dodge Avenger Sedan in your test-driving plans.

Every Avenger model includes all available safety features as standard equipment, earning the car recognition as 2011's Insurance Institute for Highway Safety Top Pick. Electronic Stability Control with advanced all-speed traction control gives drivers a steadying hand in poor road conditions. Four-wheel antilock disc brakes sense and prevent wheels from locking, so steering is more controlled on slippery roads and/or when an emergency stop is required. Advanced multistage driver and front passenger airbags, supplemental driver and front passenger seat mounted airbags, and supplemental side-curtain airbags offer injury prevention in case of a collision. Active front head restraints are prepared to keep your head and neck safe by closing the distance if the car is hit from the rear. Tires with pressure issues - both too high and too low - will prompt a warning light thanks to the tire pressure monitoring system.

The 2012 Dodge Avenger Sedan scored as follows on National Highway Traffic Safety Administration crash tests (1 = lowest, 5 = highest): Overall: 4 stars; Front: 4 stars; Side: 4 stars; Rollover: 4 stars.
