When it comes to luxury automobiles that originated in the United States, there are few names as well known as Lincoln. The company itself originated in 1915 and was named after U.S. President Abraham Lincoln. It was later acquired by Ford Motor Company and that is when the Lincoln Sedan became synonymous with quality luxury automobiles. After unsuccessful attempts to enter Ford into the luxury line of vehicles, the addition of the Lincoln brand was an asset for Henry Ford. The cars immediately took off and sales began to climb quickly.

While there have been a number of vehicles introduced by the company since its transfer of ownership, none have been as well known and well loved as the Lincoln Town Car. The Town Car was more than just another Lincoln Sedan. It boasted the luxury that one had come to expect from the company. The Town Car was so popular during its production that it was often made in stretch limousine form. Even though production of the car ended in 2011, it is still the most widely driven Lincoln in both passenger and chauffeured classes.

The Town Car as a standalone Lincoln Sedan was introduced to the market in 1981, but the nameplate had been used for many years prior to that. It began with the Continental Mark IV in 1959 to denote the top of the line trim and continued in that aspect until it was crafted into a model of its own. For those years before the model was offered those who wanted top quality luxury in their Lincoln sedans would opt for the Town Car trim. Upon its introduction as its own model, the Town Car would overtake the model of sedan that was previously considered the top model for the company.

The Continental was originally the Lincoln Sedan that most knew about and loved. It began as a personal vehicle for Edsel Ford and followed with limited production as a convertible with only a few hardtops available. The popularity of the vehicle continued to rise and production continued to meet the demands. Throughout the years of its production, the Continental underwent a number of changes to keep up with going trends and expectations by customers. It ranks alongside the Town Car as the top selling and remembered sedans offered by Lincoln. The Continental saw a decline in sales and ended its long run after the 2002 year.

As of 2012 there was only one full-size Lincoln Sedan in production. The Lincoln MKS has been sold on the market since 2008 and became the sole sedan after the Town Car was discontinued in 2011. Lincoln has ventured into other markets, such as the SUV line of vehicles, as well as the MKS. Almost 100 years since the inception of the Lincoln Motor Company and the vehicles are still widely regarded as being made with luxury being a top priority.
