  • This was the second of two no-hitters caught by Chief Zimmer and it came exactly six years after the first (Cy Young vs. Reds on September 18, 1897 at League Park III in Cleveland).

Opposing Starter: Mordecai Brown
Catcher: Frank Bowerman
Plate Umpire: George Bausewine
Attendance: 8,000
Time of Game: 1:25
Did You Know?
  • Through five innings neither team had a hit and the only men to reach base were Cubs left fielder Frank Schulte, who reached on Giants shortstop Bill Dahlen's error in the fourth inning, and Giants third baseman Art Devlin, who drew a walk with one out in the fifth.
  • Schulte stole second and went to third on Billy Maloney's out, but that was as close as the Cubs got to scoring.
  • Cubs pitcher Mordecai Brown reached base in the sixth on second baseman Billy Gilbert's error, but was doubled off first when Giants right fielder George Browne raced in and caught Jimmy Slagle's popup behind first base and threw to first baseman Dan McGann to complete the double play.
  • Brown allowed only two hits through eight innings and struck out "Turkey Mike" Donlin three times, including in the ninth, before the Giants finally broke through for the game's only run on singles by Browne, McGann, Sam Mertes, and Dahlen.
  • This was the second of two career no-hitters thrown by Christy Mathewson (vs. Cardinals on July 15, 1901 at Robison Field in St. Louis).
  • Mathewson's 31 wins in 1905 are the most in a season among modern era no-hit pitchers and he's the only 30-game winner after 1892 to throw a no-hitter.
