Did You Know?
  • Jones' no-hitter came in his first career start, making him only the second of four to accomplish the feat, but he's the only one whose no-hitter came in his first ever MLB appearance (Ted Breitenstein vs. Louisville Colonels on October 4, 1891 at Sportsman's Park I in St. Louis; Bobo Holloman vs. A's on May 6, 1953 at Sportsman's Park III in St. Louis; Tyler Gilbert vs. Padres on August 14, 2021 at Chase Field in Phoenix).
  • The Pirates' run came in the third when Patsy Donovan walked, stole second and came home on a Bumpus Jones error.
  • This no-hitter came on the season's final day and is the latest in a calendar year a major league no-hitter has been thrown.
  • Jones was the last pitcher to toss a regular season no-hitter from the 55' 5" distance before it was moved to its current 60'6" distance.
  • Legend has it that Jones was a black man who passed as white. If that's true, he preceded Sam Jones as the first African-American to throw a no-hitter by 63 years.
  • Jones is one of two pitchers whose no-hitter was his only win of the season (Dick Fowler vs. Browns on September 9, 1945 at Shibe Park in Philadelphia).
  • He's one of only two pitchers to throw a no-hitter in his only start of the season (Ted Breitenstein vs. Colonels on October 4, 1891 at Sportsman's Park I in St. Louis).
  • Among no-hit pitchers, Jones' two career wins are the fewest and he's the only non-active pitcher not to record a shutout in his career (Walker Buehler has yet to throw a shutout through 2020).
