Did You Know?
  • This is the second of two career no-hitters thrown by Ken Holtzman (vs. Braves on August 19, 1969 at Wrigley Field in Chicago) and he became the first of two Cubs pitchers to throw more than one (Jake Arrieta vs. Dodgers on August 30, 2015 at Dodger Stadium in Los Angeles; vs. Reds on April 21, 2016 at Great American Ballpark in Cincinnati).
  • Reds catcher Johnny Bench almost broke up Holtzman's no-hitter with a seventh inning bunt that rolled foul just inches from the bag and Buddy Bradford attempted to bunt for a hit leading off the eighth.
  • Holtzman scored the game's only run in the third inning when he reached base on a Tony Perez error, advanced to second on a groundout, then scored on a Glenn Beckert single.
  • Holtzman went into the game having allowed fewer than three runs only once in 12 starts and was surrendering 10.6 hits per nine innings.
  • He earned a $1500 raise after the game. Cubs catcher Danny Breeden made his 15th of only 24 career starts in his brief career.

Did You Know?
  • This was the second time the Reds had been no-hit in less than three weeks (Ken Holtzman on June 3, 1971 at Riverfront Stadium in Cincinnati).
  • Rick Wise homered twice and became the fourth pitcher to homer while tossing a no-hitter (Wes Ferrell vs. Browns on April 29, 1931 at League Park IV in Cleveland; Jim Tobin vs. Dodgers on April 27, 1944 at Braves Field in Boston; Earl Wilson vs. Angels on June 26, 1962 at Fenway Park in Boston).
  • Only a walk to Dave Concepcion in the sixth kept this from being a perfect game.
  • This was the first of two no-hitters caught by Tim McCarver (Bill Stoneman vs. Mets on October 2, 1972 at Jarry Park in Montreal).

Starter Age: 33.211
Rank among 323: 290
Opposing Starter: John Denny
Catcher: Don Werner
Plate Umpire: Terry Tata
Attendance: 38,216
Time of Game: 2:09
Did You Know?
  • Before throwing his no-hitter, Seaver had tossed five one-hitters, including one against the Chicago Cubs on September 24, 1975 in which he allowed his first hit to Joe Wallis with two outs and two strikes in the ninth inning. The game went 11 innings before the Cubs won 1-0 on a Skip Lockwood bases loaded walk to Bill Madlock.
  • The Cardinals had a runner on third base with two outs in the second after Keith Hernandez walked, stole second, and went to third on a throwing error by catcher Don Werner, but Seaver worked out of the jam.
  • After walking Ken Reitz with two outs in the second, Seaver retired 19 straight before walking pinch-hitter Jerry Mumphrey to lead off the ninth. He then retired the next three to complete his no-hitter.
  • Hernandez came closest to breaking up the no-hitter but Reds second baseman Joe Morgan stabbed his hard grounder between second and first in the fourth inning to rob Hernandez of a hit. Hernandez grounded hard up the middle in the seventh but Seaver deflected the shot to shortstop Dave Concepcion, who fired to first to narrowly retire Hernandez.
  • Werner had been in the league for four years, but was making only his 35th start behind the plate, 25 of which came in 1978 because of a Johnny Bench back injury.
