Did You Know?
  • Mike Witt's perfect game came in the Angels' last game of the season and was the first no-hitter thrown at Arlington Stadium.
  • It was also the first no-hitter to be thrown on the last day of a campaign since four A's starters threw a no-hitter against the Angels on September 28, 1975 at Oakland-Alameda County Coliseum.
  • Reggie Jackson played in both games and was instrumental in each, driving in three runs with two homers for the A's, then knocking in the only run in Witt's perfecto with a fielder's choice grounder that scored Doug DeCinces in the top of the seventh.
  • Witt went to three balls on only one hitter--Wayne Tolleson in the bottom of the seventh--and was in a 3-0 hole before he threw two strikes, then got Tolleson to ground out to second.

Did You Know?
  • This was Nolan Ryan's seventh of seven career no-hitters (vs. Royals on May 15, 1973 at Kauffman Stadium in Kansas City; vs. Tigers on July 15, 1973 at Tiger Stadium in Detroit; vs. Twins on September 28, 1974 at Anaheim Stadium; vs. Orioles on June 1, 1975 at Anaheim Stadium; vs. Dodgers on September 26, 1981 at the Astrodome in Houston; vs. Athletics on June 11, 1990 at Oakland-Alameda County Coliseum).
  • At age 44 years and 90 days, Ryan is the oldest pitcher to throw a no-hitter after breaking his own record of 43 years and 131 days set in 1990 when he held the A's hitless.
  • Among no-hit pitchers with at least 10 starts in a season, Ryan's 5.3 hits per 9 innings in 1991 are the fewest.
  • Ryan almost didn't get the start against the Blue Jays after throwing 131 pitches against the Indians in his previous start on April 26. On four days of rest, Ryan tossed another 122 pitches in his no-hitter, then threw only 10 1/3 innings in his next two starts, leaving his May 13 start against the Tigers after 4 1/3 innings due to a strained muscle in the back of his right shoulder.
  • Blue Jays third baseman Kelly Gruber played with the flu but was one of only two Blue Jays to reach base when he walked with two outs in the first inning.
  • Ryan's 16 strikeouts were the most in a no-hitter since he fanned 17 Tigers on July 15, 1973 at Tiger Stadium in Detroit.
