Did You Know?
  • Only a walk to Jerry Royster in the fourth inning kept John Montefusco from a perfect game.
  • The attendance of 1,369 was the lowest to witness a no-hitter since 1965 (Dave Morehead vs. Indians on September 16, 1965 at Fenway Park in Boston).
  • Montefusco later claimed his goal was to keep former teammate Willie Montanez from getting a hit because he was still upset that Montanez demanded to be traded from the Giants.
  • Montefusco held Montanez hitless in 10 at-bats in 1976 and the first baseman batted only .182 against Montefusco in 33 career at-bats.

Did You Know?
  • This was the seventh no-hitter to which more than one pitcher contributed, the third to feature more than two pitchers, and the first in National League history.
  • It came in only Kent Mercker's third career start in 84 appearances and was preserved on a controversial call when with two outs in the ninth third baseman Terry Pendleton was charged with an error on a grounder he didn't touch. The official scorer explained that had Pendleton not pulled up short he would have recorded the out so he charged Pendleton with an error instead of giving the batter a hit.
  • Among no-hit pitchers where data is available, Alejandro Pena's 90.9 strike percentage is the best for any pitcher who contributed to a no-hitter.
