Macy's has been one of the nation's most recognizable department stores since it first opened in New York City in 1858. Today, it has 500 locations across the U.S. and carries everything from fashion and beauty to home goods, electronics, toys and even furniture. It also owns Bloomingdale's and beauty chain Bluemercury. The retailer is synonymous with holiday events like the Macy's 4th of July Fireworks and, of course, the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade, which began in 1924. The company's enormous flagship store in New York's Herald Square has become a popular tourist spot in its own right, helping cement the retailer's place in American shopping culture.
