Matt Henningsen will rehab with the Denver Broncos this fall.
The Broncos waived Henningsen ( torn Achilles ) with an injury designation on Sunday. After he cleared waivers, Henningsen reverted to Denver's injured reserve list. He is now set to spend the 2025 season on IR before becoming a restricted free agent next March.
Henningsen (6-3, 291 pounds) tore his Achilles during a joint practice with the San Francisco 49ers last Thursday, coach Sean Payton confirmed at the team's 30-9 preseason win over the 49ers last Saturday.
"He'll be having surgery when we get back to Denver," Payton said . "And it did come back as an Achilles tear. So unfortunately -- I hate that for him -- and that'll put him out for the season."
Henningsen, 26, was picked by the Broncos in the sixth round of the 2022 NFL draft out of Wisconsin. He totaled 40 tackles, two pass breakups, two QB hits and one sack through his first two seasons (34 games) and then spent last year on the practice squad.
Henningsen joins undrafted rookie outside linebacker Johnny Walker on the team's IR list.
