After bringing in former San Francisco 49ers safety Talanoa Hufanga , the Denver Broncos have greatly improved their secondary ahead of the 2025 season.
Last year, the Broncos moved on from Justin Simmons and brought in Brandon Jones during free agency. Jones had an excellent first season in Denver, but P.J. Locke struggled in a full-time starter role. Locke is now set to be replaced in the lineup by Hufanga across from Jones.
Locke could be in danger of not only losing his starting job, but also his spot on the team. The 28-year-old safety is due $4.19 million this season, but none of it is guaranteed. The Broncos could ask Locke to take a pay cut. If he does return, Locke figures to serve as the No. 3 safety, making him a candidate for rotational playing time.
Behind the top three, next up is Devon Key , who played 251 snaps on defense and 257 snaps on special teams last fall. Behind him is 2023 sixth-round pick JL Skinner (a key special teams player) and Keidron Smith , who impressed last summer but got bumped down to the practice squad during the season.
A wild card is Delarrin Turner-Yell , who was a key special teams player in 2022 and 2023 before missing the 2024 campaign while recovering from a torn ACL. If he returns to his pre-injury form, DTY could end up back on the 53-man roster this summer.
Rounding out the depth chart is Tanner McCalister , a third-year defensive back who spent most of last season on the practice squad. He will likely compete for a similar role in 2025.

The Broncos carried five safeties on their initial 53-man roster last year. With at least seven candidates for the active roster in 2025, Denver might have to make some tough cuts -- or trades -- at safety after preseason.
