CLEVELAND — The Guardians took on the recently-gutted Minnesota Twins with a new face in the lineup on Aug. 2 at Progressive Field and came away with a 5-4 win.
C.J. Kayfus, ranked as the No. 4 prospect in the Guardians system, will made his Major League debut. He batted eighth and played right field.
The Twins , meanwhile, were fielding a skeleton crew type of a roster after the front office entered heavy sell mode ahead of the trade deadline.
Here's how the Guardians-Twins game Aug. 2 unfolded.
Guardians beat the Twins, Hunter Gaddis earns the save
Hunter Gaddis ran into some trouble, but he and the Guardians recovered to beat the Twins 5-4 with the potential tying run stranded on second base.
Edouard Julien led off the ninth inning with a double off the wall in center field. A failed bunt went as the first out, and Gaddis then struck out the next two batters to end it.
That was Gaddis' first career save.
Bo Naylor puts Guardians ahead in 8th inning
The Guardians are again out in front via a Bo Naylor RBI double to right field in the bottom of the eighth inning that has the Guardians up 5-4.
Somewhat quietly, Naylor over the last two weeks entering today was posting a .941 OPS.
Later in the inning, C.J. Kayfus came up with the bases loaded but was struck out, and Brayan Rocchio hit a flyout to end the inning.
Hunter Gaddis is entering for the ninth inning.
Jose Ramirez ties it with 2-run home run; Guardians, Twins update
Jose Ramirez has tied it with a two-run home run on the day the team is giving away his jersey, and it's 4-4 in the bottom of the fifth inning.
That's home run No. 22 for the season for him.
Daniel Schneemann cycle watch
Daniel Schneemann singled in the fifth inning. Along with a home run and a double earlier in the game, Schneemann is now a triple short of the cycle, and he should get at least one more at-bat, possibly two.
Guardians, Twins score: Tanner Bibee can't escape 5th inning
Tanner Bibee on the mound and Daniel Schneemann in center field both had a bit of an adventurous fifth inning.
For Schneemann, he nearly threw out a runner at home, but the throw was just late, and Trevor Larnach instead came away with an RBI single. Later, Schneemann appeared to either lose or misread a fly ball into shallow center field, which eventually fell for a single.
With the Twins now leading 3-2, Royce Lewis double down the left-field line to score a run and make it 4-2. That also ended Bibee's day with two outs in the fifth. Matt Festa entered the game and escaped the inning without further damage.
Matt Wallner crushes tying home run
Tanner Bibee was cruising until the top of the fourth inning, when Matt Wallner absolutely crushed a two-run home run to right field. It was only a few rows shy of reaching the concourse. Officially, it traveled 419 feet.
Daniel Schneemann hits home run; Guardians, Twins score
Daniel Schneemann, playing center field today to give Angel Martinez a day off, drilled a solo home run in the third inning that will extend the Guardians' lead to 2-0. That's Schneemann's 10th home run of the season.
C.J. Kayfus gives Guardians the lead in first MLB at-bat
Guardians prospect C.J. Kayfus stepped to the plate in the second inning with runners on the corners and delivered, grounding a ball to the left side that was enough to score the run and give the Guardians a 1-0 lead .
