In early October, Oregon Ducks men's basketball point guard Jackson Shelstad sustained a broken hand that was set to sideline him for four-to-six weeks, putting his availability for the season-opener and the ensuing games in question.
Now, per a report from CBS Sports' Jon Rothstein, Shelstad is expected to be available for the Ducks ' Players Era Festival opener against Auburn. That game will be played on Nov. 24 in Las Vegas, with several more games being played in that tournament.
"We'd like to get (Shelstad) back for a game before Vegas if possible," Oregon head coach Dana Altman said.
With that report, Shelstad can almost undoubtedly be ruled out for the Ducks' season-opener against Hawaii on Nov. 4, with matchups against Rice (Nov. 7) and South Dakota State (Nov. 12) also as major question marks.
Oregon's final game before heading to Las Vegas is a home test against in-state rival Oregon State on Nov. 17. That will be almost exactly six weeks to the day of Shelstad's injury, marking the later end of his recovery timeline.
The Ducks' primary offensive creator for the past two seasons, Shelstad was a third-team All-Big Ten performer a season ago and averaged 13.7 points, 2.9 rebounds and 2.7 assists per game while converting 45.1% of his field goals from the floor and 37.9% from 3-point range.
In last season's Players Era Festival, the West Linn, Ore., product averaged 11.3 points and was a key reason that the Ducks won the tournament, with wins over Texas A&M, San Diego State and Alabama in the championship game.
Now, despite entering the season with a broken hand, it appears that Shelstad will be able to assist Oregon in defending their Players Era Festival title come late November.
