The Carolina Panthers got the heat they were looking for.
Here are the top takeaways and observations from Thursday's joint practice with the Houston Texans . . .
Turning it up
After some unseasonably cool weather during training camp in Charlotte, Panthers head coach Dave Canales and his staff were hoping that Texas could provide a little bump in temperature this week. Well, H-Town came through, as the teams battled through some excessive heat on the morning.
Canales talked about the sweltering session with reporters.
"We've kinda been spoiled with the weather there a little bit," Canales said of their previous practices. "But I felt confident about our conditioning level. I think that we're dosing the guys the right way. Pushing them a little bit beyond their limits every day and trying to increase their workload.
"This was a crescendo of the hard work. I love that we were able to come out here, to play all the way through, finish with great two-minute drives over here on the offensive field. I gotta check out the defensive side. But I was looking around, and for the most part, this is a very fit group that's ready to play football."
The defensive side included 2025 second-round pick Nic Scourton, who was carted off due to heat-related symptoms. Canales said he hopes to have the rookie outside linebacker for Saturday's preseason contest against the Texans.
More absences
Speaking of availability for Saturday, Canales stated that cornerback Jaycee Horn is unlikely to suit up . Horn, who worked out in a limited capacity on Thursday, is still dealing with a thumb injury he sustained in a car accident last Wednesday.
Carolina was also without wide receiver Jalen Coker (illness) and inside linebacker Trevin Wallace (personal). Wallace did, however, return to the team this morning and is likely to play this weekend.
