There is a charge of optimism on the Philadelphia 76ers after acquiring Jaylen Brown in a trade with the Boston Celtics . The move was hailed by many, especially since Philadelphia was hardly mentioned in all the chatter surrounding Brown.
The same was not said when the 76ers shipped Jared McCain to the Oklahoma City Thunder in February in exchange for a first-round pick and three second-round picks. Daryl Morey , who was then the general manager of the Sixers, was slammed after declaring that they were "selling high" on McCain.
According to Philly Voice's Adam Aaronson, Max Kellerman implied on his podcast with Rich Paul that the 76ers lost McCain, Julian Champagnie , and Isaiah Joe over the years due to financial issues. However, Bob Myers , who was the guest on the episode, defended Morey's decision to trade McCain to the Thunder.

"The McCain thing was more, 'Let's do that, take the picks and try to turn them into something.' Obviously, Daryl was doing it, and I think Daryl did a very good job in many respects. Couldn't get another player back," said Myers, who briefly ran the team's basketball operations after Morey was fired in May.
"When you don't get another player back, it looks just like you just tried to get out of the tax. That's not what happened. The idea was, 'We're going to take that (first-round) pick and the seconds, and let's try to grab another player who can maybe help us more.' That was the thought. Sometimes you get it right, sometimes you don't get it right. But it wasn't, 'Let's get out of the tax.' It happened to get us out of the tax because no other player was available to trade for. But these are nuances nobody wants to hear, is my point."
Myers is the president of Harris Blitzer Sports & Entertainment, the managing entity of the 76ers and the New Jersey Devils.
McCain has blossomed in his role with the Thunder, similar to Champagnie, who recently signed a three-year, $45 million extension with the San Antonio Spurs . Joe, meanwhile, is now with the Detroit Pistons after winning a title in Oklahoma City .
Philadelphia used the first-round pick from the Thunder on Labaron Philon Jr. , who was chosen at No. 22.
