The Philadelphia 76ers have a big decision to make before they do anything this offseason, and it's finding a new president of basketball operations. They've done their due diligence on several potential candidates, and it looks like it's going to come down to four people , according to NBA insider Marc Stein.
"There are presently four main candidates in contention to be the 76ers ' next president of basketball operations: Cleveland 's Mike Gansey, Minnesota 's Matt Lloyd, Phoenix Mercury GM Nick U'Ren and Sixers assistant general manager Jameer Nelson ," Stein wrote.
For Nelson specifically, it seems as if he'll be getting a promotion , regardless of what it looks like.
"The closest thing to a sure thing at this juncture: As we first covered more than a week ago in the Sunday Best notes above, it is increasingly expected that Nelson will be promoted to general manager at worst even if an external candidate is hired over him," Stein wrote. "He is the only internal candidate in Philly being considered for the top spot by search leader Bob Myers and has been all but assured a significant role going forward no matter how the Sixers proceed."
The 76ers have candidates who have been around successful teams already, which is good news. In the end, Bob Myers is going to pick the person who aligns with the vision the organization has moving forward.
At the same time, the new president will have some decisions to make on the roster, and it may not be as easy at looks. Joel Embiid hasn't been fully healthy for some time, and he's due a lot of money in the coming years. It's uncertain what his future will look like with the 76ers and whether the new president believes that he should be a big part of their future.
