When it came to basketball, Allen Iverson was, without a shadow of a doubt, one of the best pound-for-pound players to ever lace up a pair of sneakers. Off the court, though, Iverson was a handful to deal with.
However, his recent trip to Australia revealed a side of the NBA legend that shocked many people.
Iverson was a guest at HoopsFest, a basketball event organized by the NBL (National Basketball League) that featured league games, grassroots tournaments and fan-focused activities. This year, the highlight was A.I.'s presence.
But according to NBL veteran Jason Cadee, though, their guest appeared less than enthused aboutit. Standoffish, tardy and uninterested, Iverson had the look and vibe of a man who just didn't want to be there.
However, as one Reddit user alleged, that wasn't the worst part.
Set to meet with kids suffering from cancer
A Reddit user posted that on January 22, Iverson was scheduled to meet 12 kids who suffer from at the Cavalo Prestige Melbourne. The meet-and-greet was organized by Challenge, a not-for-profit organization that supports children and families living with cancer.
What was supposed to be a meaningful and memorable experience for the children turned out to be anything but. Instead, it's likely they will remember the moment and Iverson himself, but for all the wrong reasons.
"My little brother, who is 12 years old and is currently receiving chemotherapy for ALCL lymphoma, was so excited to meet one of his idols," the Reddit user wrote . "He came out to be extremely disgusted and disappointed in Allen Iverson's behaviour, and so were the other families."
The children and their families were initially told they would get the chance to be with Iverson from 10:45 to 11:30 a.m. However, that didn't materialize as the former Philadelphia 76ers superstar's podcast appearance ran long.
"He was in the podcast room until about 12:30 pm and did not come out and apologize, instead his security did," the Reddit user added. "We were waiting in a downstairs room with his security with all of the kids, and his security told us he was 'having a bad day' and didn't want to come out."
Iverson didn't engage with the children
The families were eventually ushered upstairs, supposedly to spend time with Iverson. However, when they arrived, he was still in the middle of an interview with a media outlet. Nevertheless, the kids remained excited, especially after they were told that Iverson would sign basketballs and jerseys for them.
But lo and behold, that didn't happen either.
"After we waited hours, his security firmly told us he is not signing anything at all, and we did not get to talk to him at all, he did not say a word to anyone," the Reddit user wrote. "We were lined up and all the kids got was a photo, and he did not seem impressed about that. He had his hands in his pockets and did not smile or put his arm around any kids in any photos. He knew the kids were sick, and still did not put any effort or acknowledgement to that."
"One of the families drove six and a half hours to meet him, and the kids were so extremely sad in the end. He seemed to think he was better than everyone else, and it was obvious he did not want to have anything to do with a group of sick kids."
As of this writing, neither Iverson nor his management team has commented on his behavior in Australia. However, Andrew Bogut , a former NBA player and the first Australian to be selected No. 1 in the NBA draft, called him out for it on X.
