Allen Iverson made the headlines once again, for all the wrong reasons. The NBA legend recently visited Australia on a tour but fell short of expectations due to canceled appearances and unfulfilled commitments.
Australian NBL veteran Jason Cadee was one of the people who called Iverson out, detailing what happened in his podcast "Cut to the Jase." Cadee criticized AI's apparent disengagement during scheduled events, including his appearance at HoopsFest, Australia's massive four-day basketball, lifestyle, and culture festival held every year in Perth, Western Australia.
Cadee painted a picture of a tour plagued by Iverson's tardiness, noting that the former NBA MVP frequently showed up late and almost left as soon as he arrived. Speaking on one particularly low moment, Iverson was asked about his impressions of The Land Down Under and bluntly replied: "I haven't left my room."
Questioning the purpose of Iverson's visit
AI's diva-like behavior has been well-documented over the years. His attitude is one of the reasons why no team picked him up during the tail end of his career, which ended in a 27-game stint between Memphis and Philadelphia. And evidently, a tiger cannot change its stripes.
"I landed Thursday (at HoopsFest) and by the time I landed, I had already heard how difficult he was being and how much of a shit show it was," Cadee said . "Late to stuff, barely spoke, first interview they asked him how Australia was or something and he just laughed and said 'I haven't left my room'. Just things where I'm like 'why would you come' if you're going to be like this."
According to the current Bankstown Bruins guard, The Answer's bad behavior was a far cry from what other NBA superstars have shown when they visit the country. He noted that they never experienced any problems with Carmelo Anthony , who attended the first HoopsFest in September 2024, and Kevin Garnett and Ray Allen , who were there for the NBAxNBL preseason games last October 2025.
"I take it back to last year, we had Carmelo Anthony in town. Carmelo Anthony's walking past our practice, and obviously, we had Montrezl Harrell on our team. Carmelo stops, walks over, and just starts saying hi to our whole team. Didn't have to, wasn't there for that, practice had kind of stopped because Carmelo was there," Cadee continued .
"Kevin Garnett and Ray Allen, last year, they're out having dinners with people, they're in settings saying hi, the easiest people to approach and say hello to. So this experience, I just feel like it was really disappointing from someone that I've really looked up to. Someone said, 'Imagine if this was Kobe.' And someone else said, 'No, Kobe wouldn't do that, he would've sat there and watched all the games,'" he added.
AI ditched a meet-and-greet with young cancer patients
Stories about Iverson's overbearing behavior have since been corroborated by other people, including two-time NBL MVP Chris Anstey. Moreover, an Aussie fan took to Reddit to express his disappointment with Iverson for ditching a meeting with 12 kids who are battling cancer.
According to the author, whose 12-year-old brother had ALCL lymphoma, it was supposed to be a legitimate event by Challenge- Supporting Kids with Cancer and The Answer's management team. They were told they could have memorabilia signed, along with photos taken with the NBA icon, but none of that happened.
The incident drew ire from fans online, including former NBA player Andrew Bogut , who called Iverson " Absolute s—t human " for allegedly ignoring the cancer-stricken kids.
Although Iverson earned around $150 million throughout his career, he lost nearly everything due to a series of bad decisions . Today, he is doing tours, collabs and events he seemingly wants no part of, just to make an extra buck. Ultimately, in situations like these, a common proverb comes to mind - 'never meet your heroes', because you will likely end up disappointed.
