"It's great for the league," Groce said of Miami's special season. "The better the league is, the better the teams are, the better the depth we have, the better our league does in nonconference — you could mention a number of different things — that certainly helps the conference."
Zips basketball coverage: Akron is stunned by ejection but regoups to beat UMass
Akron Zips coach John Groce, facing, hugs his brother, Miami RedHawks coach Travis Steele, before the Mid-American Conference Tournament championship game March 15, 2025, in Cleveland, Ohio.
Success spurs attention from national media, as evidenced by Steele being interviewed this past weekend on ESPN's "College GameDay."

In the segment featuring Steele, he vowed to wear a Speedo during Miami's Selection Sunday watch party and allow himself to be lifted into the air while executing a swimming motion if the RedHawks were to finish the regular season with an unblemished record and capture the MAC Tournament crown. The concept introduced on the air by ESPN's Rece Davis would be a nod to the Miami men's swimming and diving team frequently performing the ritual during RedHawks home basketball games to show support and attempt to distract visiting players.
Groce could keep his Speedo-clad brother from going viral, yet there is no doubt Steele would rather have fun doing his best Michael Phelps impression than not. The brothers are the ultimate competitors, and they clashed in a championship game for the first time last year.
In the 2025 MAC Tournament title game, Akron overcame an 18-point deficit and defeated Miami 76-74 to seize the conference's automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament. Groce and Akron also eliminated Steele and Miami from the 2024 MAC tourney, prevailing 75-63 in the quarterfinal round.

Miami beat visiting Akron 76-73 on Jan. 3 in their lone regular-season meeting on the 2025-26 schedule.
"I'm proud of him," Groce said of Steele. "He's done a great job. I mean, from where they started to where they're at now, he's done a great job, man. They're really good, talented at both ends of the floor, got older guys, returned a lot."

On Friday, Feb. 13, Akron beat UMass 99-92 in prime time at Rhodes Arena while Miami defeated Ohio 90-74 at Millett Hall. Akron's game was televised by CBS Sports Network as Miami basked in the late-night spotlight of ESPN, not ESPN2, ESPNU or ESPN+.

Akron and Miami are tied for the nation's second-longest home winning streak — 29 games. Duke has the longest streak at 30 games.
Akron is positioned to claim the No. 2 seed in the MAC tourney, with Miami in the driver's seat for the top seed. Kent State (19-7, 10-3) is in third place.
Zips news: Isaiah Johnson happy to be honored as an Akron basketball all-time great
Akron Zips forward Amani Lyles grabs a rebound over Miami guard Peter Suder (5) during the Mid-American Conference Tournament championship game March 15, 2025, in Cleveland.
Akron and Miami each have six regular-season games remaining, with Akron visiting Western Michigan and Miami visiting UMass on Tuesday, Feb. 17.
Despite being unscathed through 25 games, Miami can't bank on losing in the MAC Tournament and receiving an at-large bid to the NCAA tourney. Entering Feb. 17, Miami's NET ranking was 51st, and its NET strength of schedule was 350th. For the sake of comparison, Akron was 62nd and 211th in those categories. The bottom line: Win it all in Cleveland or risk being left out of March Madness.

"We played against them once," Groce said of Miami. "I wish we'd have played them twice. I've always been a fan of playing each MAC team twice for basically the entire time I've been in the league. That wasn't in the cards."
It wasn't in the cards for the regular season.
But it would be great for the MAC if it were to materialize when it matters most.
