Following a 4-8 debut as coach at North Carolina, Bill Belichick is making major changes to his coaching staff.
Belichick fired both offensive coordinator Freddie Kitchens and special teams coordinator Mike Priefer on Friday morning. That means the only coordinator remaining in place is Belichick’s son, Steve, who runs the defense.
“We want to thank Coach Kitchens and Coach Priefer for their commitment and many contributions to our program and student-athletes. We wish them both nothing but the best in their future endeavors,” Belichick said in a statement.
Belichick inherited Kitchens, as the former Browns coach had been at UNC since 2023. With the Tar Heels, he had served as tight ends coach and run game coordinator (2023-24), interim coach after Mack Brown’s firing (2024) and then offensive coordinator under Belichick this season.
Carolina’s offense was dreadful this season, as the Tar Heels’ 288.8 yards per game ranked 131st in the nation.
As for Priefer, Belichick hired the former NFL special teams coordinator last January after he had been out of football since 2022. Apparently, Belichick wasn’t pleased with what he saw in Priefer‘s return.
