The Bills might not have Christian Benford in Foxborough on Sunday.
The standout cornerback has been listed as questionable with a toe injury that he suffered in practice this week. Benford was spotted in a walking boot on Thursday and didn’t practice on Friday.
“Normal practice play, just tweaked his toe,” said coach Sean McDermott, who didn’t think it was a long-term injury. “It is frustrating, but at the same time, next man up. We’ve been doing that all year. So I’m confident that somebody will step up if that’s what’s needed here.”
Benford had been playing outstanding football before suffering the injury.
The 25-year-old cornerback had scored touchdowns in back-to-back weeks. Two weeks ago, he was the AFC’s Defensive Player of the Week in a win over the Steelers, intercepting Mason Rudolph and returning a fumble for a touchdown. Then last Sunday, Benford snared a game-changing pick-six off Joe Burrow in Buffalo ’s comeback win over the Bengals.
If Benford can’t go against the Patriots on Sunday, rookie corner Maxwell Hairston will likely get a lot more playing time. The first-rounder began the season on injured reserve with an LCL sprain and has appeared in seven games.
“It’s time for him to continue to grow and his development is important for our team for this year and also beyond this year,” McDermott said.
