The decision to fire Sean McDermott was a stunning one, but Bills owner Terry Pegula revealed things likely would have been different had Buffalo defeated the Denver Broncos in the AFC Division game .
“My decision to bring in a new coach was based on the results of our game in Denver,” Pegula told reporters during a press conference on Wednesday , before later adding. “I did not fire coach based on a bad officiating decision.”
Pegula is referring to a controversial call in overtime that led to Denver advancing to the AFC Championship Game.
On third-and-11 from the Bills’ 36-yard line, Josh Allen threw a deep ball to Brandin Cooks , who looked to have hauled in the pass. Broncos cornerback Ja’Quan McMillian came up with the ball after the two rolled around on the field, though, and the officials ruled it was an interception.
But the decision to move on from McDermott also had to do with the fact Buffalo couldn’t reach the Super Bowl under him.
“I feel like we hit the proverbial playoff wall year after year,” Pegula said . “I just sensed in that locker room, like, where do we go from here with what we have? And that was the basis for my decision.”
The Bills made the playoffs in eight of McDermott’s nine seasons and won five AFC East titles. But they never reached the Super Bowl.
The Bills made the playoffs in eight of nine seasons with McDermott at the helm and won the AFC East five times.
The vacancy now becomes one of the top landing spots in the NFL. There are several candidates out there including Brian Daboll and Bills offensive coordinator Joe Brady.
