The Toronto Blue Jays fell to the Pittsburgh Pirates on Sunday, losing 4-1. In the game, Vladimir Guerrero Jr. left the contest after being hit by a pitch.
Guerrero underwent X-rays, which were negative, and now, manager John Schnider is giving an update per Shi Davidi of SportsNet.
Schneiger said the pitch "caught him in a weird spot, like in the nerve," but the diagnosis was the best possible news. He also noted that it was a possibility that Guerrero plays in the next game for the Blue Jays .
Guerrero has been solid for the Jays this year, hitting .287 with 22 RBIs and a .758 OPS. Still, the power has not been the same this year. He has just three home runs so far this year, and has not hit a longball since May 17, his only one of the month. Guerrero has also struggled in May. He came into the month hitting .354, but is just 14-75 this month so far, with seven RBIs. He is hitting just .187 this month with a .289 on-base percentage.
The Jays need his offense to come back alive. They are sitting 21st in the majors in runs scored while also 23rd in slugging percentage. They are 13th in batting average, but just 26th in on-base percentage.
The Blue Jays are 25-28 on the year, which places them in second place in the AL East. They are 11 games back of the Tampa Bay Rays in the division, but just a half game behind the Minnesota Twins for the final wild card spot in the American League. They open up a three-game series with the Miami Marlins on Monday.
