Lucas Giolito remains a free agent with Opening Day just days away.
One MLB insider urged the Atlanta Braves to sign the veteran after they were hit with another injury.
“Braves absolutely need to sign Lucas Giolito now,” the New York Post’s Jon Heyman posted to X . “ Spencer Strider is the latest loss, hitting the IL with an oblique. Other recent hits: ((Spencer) Schwellenbach , (Hurston) Waldrep, (Joey) Wentz, (Jurickson) Profar). And since they are owned by a public company, we know they make a huge profit.”
The Braves believe Strider will miss a few weeks due to his oblique injury. The pitcher had a down 2025 season after missing all of 2024 due to Tommy John surgery.
Waldrep has loose bodies in his elbow and underwent a procedure. Schwellenbach underwent a similar procedure. The Braves are hopeful both pitchers will pitch at some point in 2026.
Giolito would fill a void for the Braves who are in need of pitching depth.
Giolito spent the last two seasons with the Red Sox , but did not pitch in 2024 due to an elbow injury that required an internal brace procedure .
The 31-year-old was serviceable for Boston in 2025 with a 3.41 ERA, 10-4 record and 121 strikeouts in 145 innings.
While he was eligible for one, the Red Sox did not extend the $22.025 million qualifying offer to Giolito, who had his mutual option for 2026 declined, after 2025.
In December, he said he saw “ the writing on the wall ” when it came to a potential reunion with Boston .
Toward the end of the season Giolito struggled with his velocity. He was ruled out of Boston’s American League Wild Card series against the New York Yankees due to elbow soreness . The MRI revealed no structural damage , but teams appear to be taking a cautious approach when it comes to Giolito.
