While the Milwaukee Brewers aim to maintain their winning record on Thursday against the Arizona Diamondbacks , the club was hit with some concerning news early in the contest. Starting pitcher Brandon Woodruff was forced to exit the game early after his velocity noticeably dropped in the second inning.
Reports indicate that Woodruff's fastball failed to reach 87 miles per hour , according to ESPN's Jeff Passan. The 33-year-old right-hander has been throwing his fastball at 92.5 mph throughout the 2026 campaign. It's a situation that suggests Woodruff may have suffered some sort of injury in his throwing arm.
" Brandon Woodruff exited his start for Milwaukee in the second inning. His fastball didn't even reach 87 mph after sitting at 92.5 all year," reported Passan. "Tough luck for the Brewers, though they do plenty of starting-pitching depth, with Logan Henderson carving at Triple-A and big league-ready."
The Brewers will conduct a further evaluation of Woodruff's arm before announcing an official diagnosis. There are several causes it could be, as a drop in velocity could be caused by a UCL tear, a labrum tear, arm/shoulder fatigue, or a valgus extension overload.
Depending on what the issue is will determine how long the nine-year veteran could be out for. Luckily, as Passan pointed out, the Brewers have solid depth in the starting rotation. Additionally, Logan Henderson, who has been up and down in the majors and minors the past few seasons, has looked phenomenal this year at Triple-A Nashville this year.
Regardless, this is tough news for Brandon Woodruff . He entered Thursday's matchup against the Diamondbacks with a 3.77 ERA and 1.012 WHIP while recording 23 strikeouts.
