The Cleveland Browns hired a first-time defensive coordinator in Mike Rutenberg , but they have paired that inexperience with one of the most experienced defensive minds in the NFL. The Browns are hiring long-time NFL coach Dom Capers as a senior defensive analyst on their staff.
An NFL coach since 1986, Capers has been around the block. Holding titles of defensive backs coach, defensive coordinator, head coach, and more throughout his time in the NFL, Capers has been taking gigs as a senior defensive assistant since 2019. His most recent job was with the Carolina Panthers from 2024 to 2026 as a senior defensive assistant.
Capers joins a staff in Cleveland that has not experienced any turnover despite the departure of former defensive coordinator Jim Schwartz. Rutenberg has managed to maintain all of linebackers coach Jason Tarver, safeties coach Ephraim Banda, and defensive backs coach Brandon Lynch by giving them all title promotions as well. This was one of the bigger fears of losing Schwartz: losing his assistants.
We'll see what Capers can bring to the Browns, now in his 40th season of coaching at the NFL level.
