BOSTON — Charlie McAvoy wasn’t ready to give his side of the story yet.
The NHL’s Department of Player Safety offered the Bruins ' alternate captain an in-person hearing to plead his case for the events in the final minutes of Boston’s season-ending Game 6 loss to the Sabres .
In person interviews are offered when a player could be facing a suspension of six games or longer.
McAvoy and Buffalo’s Zach Benson were each racing to the corner with icing in the balance with 1:31 remaining and the Sabres leading 4-1.
Benson appeared to slew foot the Bruins defenseman, sending McAvoy sprawling to the ice.
The referee raised his arm to call a tripping penalty on Benson, but McAvoy jumped up and went after Benson. He swung his stick and slashed the Sabres forward in the arm.
McAvoy was given a 5-minute major and a game-misconduct ending his season a few minutes early.
McAvoy was asked if he has expected the call from DPOS.
“I didn’t give it too much thought at all. I was caught up in the end of the season and losing. That was more where my focus was,” he said. “With everything related to that, out of respect for the process, I’m not going to comment anything on that until I have a chance to speak with them.”
McAvoy said the hearing hasn’t been scheduled.
“Not yet,” he said. “It’s something we’ll have to do when it works for everybody.”
