C.B. Bucknor’s game behind home plate ended early.
The home plate umpire was struck in the face on a foul tip off the bat of Tampa Bay Rays ’ Nick Fortes in the top of the second inning.
The pitcher from Milwaukee Brewers ace Jacob Misiorowski was 100.2 mph.
Bucknor left the game after being tended to by the Brewers training staff.
The longtime umpire has been in the headlines the last week, the latest coming Tuesday when he made an egregious incorrect call when Jake Bauers reached first base on a missed throw.
Bucknor, however, called Bauers out because he didn’t touch first base.
But it was clear as day he did.
Days before that, Bucknor’s nightmare game behind home plate between the Boston Red Sox and the Cincinnati Reds was a big topic of discussion. Bucknor had six calls overturned by the ABS challenge system.
One of Bucknor’s calls also led to Red Sox manager Alex Cora getting ejected after Trevor Story checked his swing but the umpire called him out in the top of the eighth inning with two on and Boston down, 5-4.
