Cam Newton , once again, went after Drake Maye and what he’s done for the Patriots this season when the former NFL MVP called the quarterback a game manager and not a game-changer.
Robert Griffin III disagreed with Newton and believes the ESPN personality is “missing the mark.”
“Every game-changing quarterback knows how to manage a game. Every game manager has to find a way to make game-changing plays,” Griffin said on “Outta Pocket With RGIII.” “When you look at Drake Maye , he is a game-changer.”
Griffin added to his commentary on X.
“Drake Maye is a game changing franchise QB who is Top 2 in the MVP race and took the Patriots from 4-13 to 14-3,” he wrote . “THERE ISN’T ANYTHING NEGATIVE TO SAY ABOUT HIM. Cam Newton finding ways to devalue him is unnecessary and sad for Drake Maye since Cam was one of his heroes growing up.”
Newton’s argument was that Maye’s success this season has more to do with Mike Vrabel and Josh McDaniels. But even under Jerod Mayo and Alex Van Pelt during Maye’s rookie season, the quarterback showed growth each week.
Newton called the Patriots’ success “ fool’s gold ” twice due to their schedule. Maye brushed off the criticism and said Newton gets paid to make such comments, and he wasn’t even sure what show Newton was on. Stephen A. Smith inserted himself into the drama, calling Maye a liar because of the ratings “First Take” draws.
Now with the 2025 regular season wrapped up, Maye is a legitimate MVP contender. The 23-year-old finished the 2025 season with 4,394 yards (fourth in the NFL), 31 touchdowns (third) and league-best 77.2 QBR. He also eclipsed the 4,000 passing yard mark and has put his name in the Patriots and NFL history books throughout the season.
