Cam Schlittler will make his Fenway Park debut on Thursday when the New York Yankees wrap up their three-game series against the Boston Red Sox .
The pitcher from Massachusetts wrote a new chapter of the historic rivalry after his dominant Game 3 performance against Boston in the American League Wild Card last fall. He drew the ire of Red Sox fans with his "drinking dat dirty water" post on X, and he revealed some fans are still harassing him.
Schlittler told The New York Post's Joel Sherman that he and his family have received death threats and other messages "that are pretty unreal."
The 25-year-old made it clear he has nothing against Red Sox manager Alex Cora or the city of Boston.
"Most normal fans could care less, right?," Schlittler told Sherman . "It's just those diehards that just have nothing else in their lives other than baseball or sports that really care about this and the fact that I play for the Yankees makes it worse for them."
Schlittler doesn't believe the death threats or other messages have warranted the attention of the police, he noted his dad, John, is Needham's chief of police and "has connections," but has not gone to that level yet.
Schlittler grew up in Walpole and was a Red Sox fan. He was drafted by the Yankees in 2022.
While he isn't scared for his safety when returns to Boston because he's encountered plenty of friendly fans, Schlittler does expect a hostile environment at Fenway Park on Thursday when he takes the mound.
"It's gonna be bad, It's gonna be bad. I'm not nervous about it. But it's gonna be loud," he said . "They're gonna probably have dudes that are my age or a little bit younger, sitting right outside the (visiting) bullpen (that is mostly exposed in right field), yelling, whatever, probably throwing stuff at me, trying to grab me. That's kind of what I expect. So I know the guys are excited for it and I'm excited for it."
