The St. Louis Cardinals announced multiple roster moves before their series against the Chicago Cubs . Catcher Jimmy Crooks has been recalled from Triple-A, the team announced. Additionally, outfielder Nelson Velasquez was selected from Triple-A while infielder Cesar Prieto and catcher Yohel Pozo were optioned to Triple-A.
Crooks, 24, appeared in 15 games at the MLB level last year with St. Louis . He hit just .133 during that span, but he is a young catcher with potential. Crooks has recorded a slash line of .262/.412/.567 across 39 games played at Triple-A so far in 2026. He has hit 13 home runs as well.
Meanwhile, Velasquez was also promoted to the big league ball club. The 27-year-old has appeared in a total of 194 MLB games with the Cubs and Kansas City Royals . He is now set to make his Cardinals debut after hitting .232/.344/.420 across 40 games at Triple-A in 2026.
Overall, the Cardinals have been one of the biggest surprises in baseball this season. They are still rebuilding, but St. Louis has been able to compete as well. Many players have stepped up as the Cardinals continue to upset expectations .
The ball club is in third place in the National League Central standings at the moment. They trail the first place Milwaukee Brewers by 4.5 games. The Cardinals are only a half-game behind the Cubs for second place in the division.
The Cubs-Cardinals series in St. Louis certainly should be competitive this weekend. Whichever team wins the series could end up in second place behind the Brewers. First pitch for the contest on Friday night is scheduled for 7:15 PM EST.
