The St. Louis Cardinals remained part of a heated debate Wednesday after former reliever Steve Kline weighed in on Abner Uribe 's celebration during Tuesday night's game vs. the Milwaukee Brewers .
The tension started in the second game of the three-game series at American Family Field, where the Brewers beat the Cardinals 6-0. In the eighth inning, Uribe struck out Alec Burleson , then turned toward the Cardinals' dugout and performed a triple crotch-chop celebration in the style of WWE's D-Generation X.
Brewers manager Pat Murphy publicly called the celebration "embarrassing" and "unacceptable." The 25-year-old reliever later apologized to his teammates, coaches, and Brewers fans — but not to the Cardinals. He also claimed that Cardinals manager Oliver Marmol had previously gestured that Brewers hitters would be thrown at earlier in the series, an allegation St. Louis denied.
On Wednesday evening, Cardinal Territory posted a clip on X, formerly Twitter, from Kline's appearance on the show as he shared how he believes the club should handle the disrespect.
"I think you just drill the first two players."
Kline pitched four seasons for the Cardinals and was known for his old-school, hard-edged style during his playing career. His comment added to the ongoing debate about baseball's unwritten rules, retaliation, and player safety in the modern game.
The reaction quickly split fans. Some saw the former St. Louis reliever's stance as a reflection of how players once handled on-field disrespect, while others criticized the suggestion because intentional hit-by-pitches are now heavily discouraged.
The Cardinals and Brewers still have to manage the fallout from a moment that moved beyond a single post-strikeout celebration. Uribe's apology may have addressed Milwaukee's side, but Kline's response showed how emotions from a division series can continue carrying into the wider conversation, even after the Brewers completed the sweep.
