FOXBOROUGH – The status of the Patriots ’ top cornerback will be one of the top storylines as Mike Vrabel’s team prepares for its next playoff matchup.
After leaving the team’s wild-card win with a head injury, Vrabel confirmed that Christian Gonzalez will enter this week in the NFL’s concussion protocol. That means his status will be uncertain in this weekend’s AFC divisional game
“Gonzo continues to play at a high level. Those are the expectations he has for himself, and we have for him,” Vrabel said. “He would be in the protocol. How long does that last? I don’t know, but when you don’t return to the game, they won’t let you go back in the game. That would put him in the protocol. Wherever that goes, that goes.”
Following the team’s win, Gonzalez was in the Patriots ’ locker room. Although he wasn’t allowed to give interviews, the Pro Bowler said he was “fine.”
Whether or not he’s available this weekend, however, remains to be seen. When a player enters the concussion protocol, he needs to go through a five-step process before being cleared to play.
Through the league’s “return-to-participation” protocol, players are gradually cleared from one phase to another as long as their symptoms don’t return. Players go from being able to work out to practice without contact before being cleared for contact. The final step includes the player being evaluated by an independent neurologist.
For every player, this timeline is different. For example, TreVeyon Henderson suffered a concussion in Baltimore on Dec. 21 and was cleared seven days later to play against the New York Jets .
Jared Wilson , however, also entered the concussion protocol following that win in Baltimore, and the Patriots’ starting guard missed the final two games before being cleared last week.
Gonzalez, 23, earned Pro Bowl honors this season for the first time in his NFL career. In 14 games, he finished with 10 pass breakups and 69 tackles. On Sunday night, he had two pass breakups on Chargers quarterback Justin Herbert .
The Patriots hope that Gonzalez is back for next Sunday’s playoff matchup against either the Pittsburgh Steelers or Houston Texans .
“We appreciate what he’s done and his willingness to line up in different places,” Vrabel said. “It’s not quite as easy - different coverages, locations, and motions, things like that. He’s handled that all really well. Hopefully, we’ll get him back.”
