Yet another member of Sean Payton's staff is drawing interest from another NFL club, but not as a head coach candidate this time.
The Dallas Cowboys requested an interview with Denver Broncos defensive backs coach Jim Leonhard , according to ESPN's Todd Archer . That would be a promotion for Leonhard, and Denver granted the Dallas request . Leonhard is scheduled for a Zoom interview for the Cowboys' DC opening on Saturday, according to NFL Network's Ian Rapoport .
Dallas head coach Brian Schottenheimer was an offensive coordinator with the New York Jets during Leonhard's stint with New York as a safety (2009-2011). Earlier this week, the Cowboys' coach was full of praise when asked about Leonhard.
"I saw Jim before we played Denver," Schottenheimer said, via the Fort Worth Star-Telegram 's Nick Harris . "Jim's a heck of football coach. You talk about a great football player, man. We had some great years together in New York. Again, I would not say we've stayed in touch. This business is hard. You get going a million miles [an hour]. You gotta speak to what Sean and what that entire staff has done there. Vance Joseph is a guy I have a ton of respect for. Jim's an excellent coach."
The Broncos , of course, won't want to lose Leonhard if current defensive coordinator Vance Joseph takes a head coach job this offseason. If Joseph exits, Leonhard would be the most logical in-house candidate to replace him. Leonhard has had opportunities to leave for a promotion in the past, so it seems safe to assume he would remain in Denver if given a promotion to DC. That presumably depends on whether Joseph lands an HC job this hiring cycle.
NFL teams are also considering Broncos quarterbacks coach ( Davis Webb ) and special teams coordinator (Darren Rizzi) for head coach openings. That's four total Denver coaches currently drawing interest from other clubs.
