Craig Breslow replaced Chaim Bloom in 2023 as the Red Sox chief baseball officer, but the two have a friendship outside of baseball.
The two have sons in the same baseball league, so they often see each other and discuss work. With Breslow’s role in Boston and Bloom as the president of baseball operations for the St. Louis Cardinals , Breslow admitted they find time to “peel off” to have discussions.
“We have a great relationship, and we obviously have had very similar experiences, and so, it does make for interesting conversations,” Breslow told The Athletic’s Jen McCaffrey . “And yeah, at games, we’ll have to find ways to kind of peel off behind the fence or something to make sure nobody overheard these St. Louis and Boston discussions.”
The Red Sox and the Cardinals pulled off two trades in the offseason that involved Boston acquiring Sonny Gray and Willson Contreras .
Bloom was fired by the Red Sox in 2023 and Breslow was hired shortly after. Even though Breslow took over for Bloom, it hasn’t stopped them from having a professional working relationship.
“We’ve never had an explicit conversation about it,” Breslow said . “I think there’s just, hopefully, an understanding and a respect for the jobs that each of us has to do. He did a lot of really good things here, so I’m thankful for the people that we have here and the young talent that we have here.”
Bloom helped rebuild Boston’s farm system during his tenure while Breslow has been able to build around it and get the Red Sox back to the postseason in 2025 for the first time since 2021.
It won’t take long for Breslow and Bloom to see one another in the regular season. The Cardinals host the Red Sox for a three-game series beginning April 10.
