The Red Sox begin their 2026 season Thursday and one former MLB general manager made a bold prediction regarding the club.
After 2025 featured zero no-hitters, Jim Bowden predicted it wouldn't take long for one to happen in 2026.
" Garrett Crochet , Garrett Whitlock and Aroldis Chapman combine to throw the season's first no-hitter, which falls on Crochet's fourth start of the year for the Red Sox ," Bowden wrote in The Athletic's bold predictions .
The last time the Red Sox threw a no-hitter was in 2008 when Jon Lester accomplished the feat against the Kansas City Royals at Fenway Park.
Crochet is coming off his first season in Boston . He went 18-5 with a 2.59 ERA, a 1.028 WHIP and a league-leading 255 strikeouts. Crochet finished second to Detroit Tigers ace Tarik Skubal in the American League Cy Young race.
Whitlock and Chapman also had strong seasons in 2025, with the latter coming off one of his best years of his career.
The Red Sox focused on their rotation in the offseason adding Johan Oviedo , Sonny Gray and Ranger Suárez on top of already having Crochet and Brayan Bello . There has been a lot of hype around the rotation, and the first look of it will be Thursday against the Cincinnati Reds when Crochet takes the mound.
