The Chicago Cubs were defeated by a final score of 5-1 by the St. Louis Cardinals on Sunday night. The Cubs have been rather inconsistent this season , which is something that continued during their series against the Cardinals. Manager Craig Counsell addressed the team's loss to the Cardinals on Sunday, as he reflected on a specific "bad break" that occurred , via Marquee Sports Network and MLB.com.
"We caught a bad break with the (Alec) Burleson pop up," Counsell said of a pop up that dropped in for a hit with two runners on base and two outs in a 2-0 ball game off the bat of Cardinals first baseman Alec Burleson . "… Unfortunately he just put it in the right place. Nothing you can do about that."
Burleson's bloop hit gave the Cardinals a 3-0 lead and they never looked back. The Cubs have performed well at times this year , but the inconsistency has been a problem. The team's lineup failed to get much of anything going from a run-scoring standpoint on Sunday as well.
"You know offensively I thought we swung the bats better than one run," Counsell said. "But hit a lot of balls at people, you know, we end up with just one run."
Chicago has an off day on Monday before beginning a three-game series at home against the Athletics on Tuesday. The Cubs are hoping to get back on track as soon as possible. First pitch for the Athletics and Cubs clash on Tuesday night is scheduled for 8:05 PM EST.
