The Chicago Cubs have been able to remain competitive this season despite dealing with a plethora of injuries. The Cubs' starting pitching has been hit especially hard by the injury bug . However, they are likely going to receive Edward Cabrera and Matthew Boyd boosts soon. Meghan Montemurro of the Chicago Tribune shared a crucial injury update ahead of the team's game against the Athletics on Tuesday.
"Edward Cabrera (blister on right middle finger) is on track to come off the IL and start this weekend vs. Giants. Matthew Boyd will make another rehab start Saturday at Triple-A Iowa. If that goes well he will come off the IL and return to Cubs rotation during upcoming road trip," Montemurro reported.
Cabrera, 28, pitched to a 4.00 ERA across 10 starts before landing on the injured list. He added 47 strikeouts in his 54 innings on the mound. Cabrera, who was acquired in an offseason trade by the Cubs, is in his first season with Chicago.
Boyd, a 35-year-old veteran, turned in a 6.00 ERA across his first six starts of the 2026 campaign before landing on the IL. The veteran has also struck out 31 batters in 24 innings of work.
The Cubs are set to enter the game on Tuesday night with a 32-28 record. They have not played their best baseball in recent weeks, but Chicago is still only 5.5 games behind the Milwaukee Brewers for first place in the National League West standings.
First pitch for the Athletics and Cubs game on Tuesday night is scheduled for 8:05 PM EST at Wrigley Field in Chicago.
