It has been a horrible stretch of play as of late for the Chicago Cubs . The team has fallen to third in the NL Central, as the Cubs have lost 11 of their last 13 games .
The Cubs have also lost eight straight and just got more bad news, as one of their starting pitchers is heading to the IL, according to a release from the team on X, formerly Twitter.
Edward Cabrera has been placed on the 15-day IL, retroactive for May 21, due to a right middle-finger blister. Cabrera left his start on Wednesday after just three innings, giving up four hits and four runs, with just one earned, in the game. He would take the loss as the Milwaukee Brewers won the game 5-0.
Cabrera is 3-2 on the year, with a 4.00 ERA and a 1.35 WHIP. Still, he has struggled in May. In his four starts, he is 0-2 with a 5.79 ERA so far this month.
In the corresponding move, Jordan Wicks has been recalled. Wick has been pitching for Triple-A Iowa all year. He has started seven games so far with a 4.44 ERA and a 1.56 WHIP. He did pitch in eight games in 2025 with the Cubs, going 0-1 with a save and a 6.38 ERA. He has not made a start at the major league level since 2024, when he started ten games for the Cubs. If Wicks is inserted into the starting rotation, he will pitch on Tuesday against the Pittsburgh Pirates on the road.
The Cubs are 29-23 on the year , which is two and a half games back of the Brewers in the NL Central. The Cubs finish their three-game series, looking to avoid the sweep, with the Houston Astros on Sunday afternoon. They open a four-game set with the Pirates on Monday.
