The New York Mets kicked off the 2026 season by chasing reigning National League Cy Young winner Paul Skenes out of the game after 37 pitches and earning an 11-7 win over the Pittsburgh Pirates .
But could there have been a bad omen during the win?
Two birds collided in the outfield and one fell to its demise. The deceased animal fell next to Mets rookie Carson Benge. Those in attendance at Citi Field posted to X that he was being “ heckled to pick it up. ”
The deceased bird was removed by staff.
Many believe a dead bird is a sign of a bad omen that represents misfortune. Some believe it’s a sign of a necessary transformation.
Benge went 1-for-3 with two walks, an RBI and two runs in New York’s win. His one hit was his first major league home run.
The bird incident comes 25 years and two days after MLB legend Randy Johnson hit and killed a bird with a pitch during a spring training game.
