Paul Skenes’ start was over almost as quickly as it started.
The Pirates ace didn’t even make it out of the first inning of Pittsburgh ’s Opening Day game against the New York Mets at Citi Field.
Skenes gave up five earned runs on four hits, issued two walks and didn’t record a strikeout in ⅔ of an inning. The reigning National League Cy Young Award winner threw just 37 pitches.
His ERA to start the season is 67.50.
There was plenty of optimism surrounding the Pirates going into the 2026 season due to a strong offseason that included bolstering the lineup. But it started on a sour note as Skenes imploded on the mound.
It was the shortest outing of Skenes’ MLB career.
O’neil Cruz didn’t make things easier for the pitcher after he misjudged a fly ball which led to a three-run triple before he lost what should have been an easy fly ball in the sun that led to the Mets’ fifth run of the game.
