The Patriots got exactly what they needed from Drake Maye against the Jets: complete domination.
Maye had enjoyed one of his best games against the Jets during the Patriots 27-14 Week 11 win, starting out 11-for-11. He was just as perfect in this game.
He once again hit that 11-for-11 mark out of the gate, and finished the half 17 for 19 for 229 yards. He threw four touchdown passes to four different receivers in the opening 30 minutes.
The game was well over at that point, as Maye continued to make a case to earn the NFL’s MVP award with the Patriots blasting the Jets 42-10 at MetLife Stadium.
By game’s end, he had thrown five TD passes, all to different receivers including rookie Efton Chism III’s first.
It was important for Maye and the Patriots to avoid a letdown with a playoff spot already clinched. The Patriots quarterback made sure that didn’t happen.
Maye got taken out with five minutes to go in the third quarter with a 42-3 lead and backup Josh Dobbs taking over.
Maye finished 19-for-21 with the five TD passes and a near perfect 157.0 quarterback rating. He was also 9-for-9 against man coverage. He produced a touchdown every time he touched the ball. Granted, it was the Jets, but it was impressive none-the-less.
Maye was operating without two of his top receivers as Mack Hollins (abdomen) was placed on IR Saturday, while Kayshon Boutte missed the game due to being in concussion protocol.
No matter. Maye still shredded the lowly Jets defense. He’s basically owned the Jets in both games played this season.
The Patriots had already clinched a playoff spot with last week’s win over Baltimore , but still had “unfinished business” in Mike Vrabel’s words. They had several more goals to conquer. They hoped to win the division, give themselves a shot at the AFC’s top seed, and also finish the season with a perfect 8-0 record.
Mission accomplished on the latter. And easily.
Maye’s performance also kept the division and top seed in play with one week to go. And, without question, he kept himself in the conversation for the NFL’s MVP.
The Maye-Stefon Diggs connection rocked once again.
Diggs had 6 catches for 101 yards and a touchdown in the first half alone, as the Patriots jumped out to a 35-3 lead.
With his performance, Maye also joined some elite company in Patriot annals.
With his 30-yard pass to Chism in the first quarter, beating the blitz with his pass to the rookie, Maye crossed the 4,000 passing yard threshold. He’s only the 3rd player in team history with 4,000 passing yards in a season, joining Tom Brady and (11 times) and DrewBledsoe (twice).
So after getting the comeback monkey off his back last week, overcoming an 11-point fourth quarter deficit in the Patriots playoff-clinching win over the Ravens, Maye kept his foot on the gas.
That’s exactly what he promised during the week.
