FOXBOROUGH - Drake Maye is a complete novice when it comes to throwing the football in altitude. The Patriots second-year quarterback indicated Wednesday he has never stepped foot in Colorado.
He’ll find out soon enough what kind of impact the thin air might have on his long ball. Or his wind capacity when the Patriots square off with the Denver Broncos in the AFC Championship game Sunday at Empower Field.
“I haven’t thrown at altitude before. I’ve never been to Colorado or to a place with altitude where I’m throwing a football,“ Maye said. ”But I think there is some adjustment to it. I think, you know, feeling out warmups and seeing what the deep ball is like, or kind of what the altitude does.”
Maye knows fatigue could also be a factor, but he’s mostly concerned with how his ball is going to fly. He’ll go through his usual warmup process, and possibly vary it slightly.
“Maybe throw a few extra deep ones, see how it is,” Maye said. “I think it’ll be pretty cool. Get a few extra yards on a deep ball. We can always use that.”
Maye was one of the most accurate throwers during the regular season with a completion percentage over 70%.
Through his first two playoff games, Maye has thrown 4 touchdowns, 2 interceptions and has fumbled six times, losing three of them.
