The Anaheim Ducks have one less offer sheet to worry about, as they have signed Pavel Mintyukov to a new contract. Reports surfaced Sunday that the defenseman was in an offer-sheet negotiation with another team . But before that transaction could go through, Pat Verbeek locked up the defenseman. Sportsnet's Elliotte Friedman broke the news .
"Hearing Pavel Mintyukov and the Anaheim Ducks are getting an extension done. It will be in the Brandt Clarke range, which is 5 x $7.4M," Friedman reported.
Later on, Frank Seravalli reported that the deal was five years, $7.2 million per year. That's a total of $36 million.
Mintyukov was drafted tenth overall by the Ducks in 2022 and has played 204 games for the club. He has not grabbed a hold of a top-four spot yet, necessitating the trades for Jacob Trouba and John Carlson . But those players are gone now, so Mintyukov has a golden opportunity ahead of him.
Ducks center Leo Carlsson signed a five-year, $90 million offer sheet with the Philadelphia Flyers on Friday. The 21-year-old will be the highest-paid player in the league next year. But whether he will make that money with the Flyers or the Ducks is unknown. If he goes to Philly, it will cost them four first-round picks.
Mintyukov, by all accounts, nearly signed an offer sheet of his own. But it was also reported that he wanted to stay in Anaheim, which he will do now. The Ducks made the playoffs last year on the back of their incredible young core, and Mintyukov is looking to leap into that group.
Mintyukov's contract is reportedly similar to the one the Los Angeles Kings gave Brandt Clarke earlier in the offseason. Clarke is a year older, but has fewer games played than his Russian counterpart. Could the Ducks have gotten a discount on a defenseman of the future with this deal?
