When the North Carolina Tar Heels play basketball, there's a strong chance star freshman Caleb Wilson enjoys a big game.
Wilson, who is Georgia's reigning Gatorade Boys Basketball Player of the Year, quickly took the college basketball world by storm in his first game. Now nine games in, Wilson is averaging a double-double and UNC's go-to guy in closing moments.
During North Carolina's 81-61 win over Georgetown on Sunday , Wilson impressed again with a 20-point, 14-rebound double-double.
Wilson played so well that he drew praise from Hoyas (6-3) head coach Ed Cooley. Check out what Georgetown's leader had to say afterwards:
"Wilson is...I haven't seen many players like him in college basketball in probably 15 years," Cooley remarked. "He's a hell of a talent. I see him being an NBA All-Star. He has the ability to make pro moves. Athletic, long, incredible rebounder, plays in transition. He reminds me a lot of Tracy McGrady."
McGrady is a 7-time NBA All-Star who won the league's scoring title twice. Standing at 6'8" and bringing a similar skillset to Wilson, this is quite the compliment and comparison.
Cooley is a fairly successful coach at the mid-major level, leading Providence College to seven NCAA Tournament appearances between 2011-2023, including an appearance in the 2022 Sweet 16. Now in the Nation's Capital, Cooley is hoping to restore Georgetown to its glory in the John Thompson days.
In addition to Wilson's own talent, he forms one of college basketball's most lethal post scoring attacks with Henri Veesaar . Hubert Davis highlighted that while Wilson can score at will, he's also an excellent passer , which forces opponents to defend him in additional ways.
