In between coaching gigs, former Bruins coach Bruce Cassidy is working as a studio analyst on TNT. After Tuesday, he might be able to pick up a side gig as a psychic.
As they often do during the intermission report between the end of regulation and overtime the analysts all predicted, who’d score the eventual game winner.
Cassidy, who won a Stanley Cup in Vegas , is expected to be a much-sought after candidate for open coaching jobs. But his TV work was strong. He picked the Bruins to win and David Pastrnak , who became a superstar on his watch in Boston , to be the hero.
“I’m going to pick the Bruins. They’ve hung in there pretty good today,” Cassidy said. “I’ll take my old friend David Pastrnak . He’s been good at times, a little quiet for him, but still around the play enough that I think he’ll find a way to ricochet one in off a D-man in front and get a lucky one.”
Cassidy, who was fired by the Golden Knights late in the season, got most of the prediction right.
If Pastrnak was lucky, it was because he was coming onto the ice at an opportune time. Hampus Lindholm recognized it and the two hooked up like a quarterback and a receiver for a touchdown on the slant pattern.
But there was nothing lucky about the goal once Pastrnak had the puck. With a defenseman just behind him, he charged toward the left post and then stopped abruptly.
Alex Lyon bit on the fake and couldn’t reverse his body’s momentum. Pastrnak shifted back and tucked it around the goalie’s left skate inside the right post.
Pastrnak joined the TNT crew remotely after the game and Cassidy thanked him for making him look good.
“Thatta boy Pasta, you got me a steak dinner and a bottle of win from these guys,” Cassidy said.
The win kept the Bruins alive in their best-of-seven series against the Buffalo Sabres , who lead 3-2. Game 6 is Friday in Boston.
