Former Celtics point guard Rajon Rondo has interviewed for the open New Orleans Pelicans head coaching job, according to NBA insiders Marc Stein and Jake Fischer .
The Pelicans job is currently vacant after the team dismissed Willie Green early this season. Assistant James Borrego was given the interim title and remains a candidate for the job, but the Pelicans are casting a wide net under president of basketball operations Joe Dumars.
Rondo was widely known for his high IQ during his playing days in Boston and elsewhere. He played for nine teams during his 16-year NBA career including nine in Boston.
The point guard was a special assistant on Doc Rivers’ coaching staff in Milwaukee last season but has largely been out of the spotlight since ending his playing career in 2022.
Rondo does have some connection with New Orleans after playing with the Pelicans during the 2017-18 season and leading New Orleans to a first round playoff upset over the Blazers. Rondo won two titles in the NBA with the Celtics in 2008 and the Lakers in 2020.
