For the second straight year, the New York Giants selected an edge-rusher in the 2026 NFL Draft, prompting many to openly wonder if the team planned to trade Kayvon Thibodeaux . And once again, the team showed little interest in doing so, even if they did entertain a few conversations.
Thibodeaux has been brought up in trade rumors for well over a year, and that increased tenfold when Joe Schoen took Ohio State edge-rusher Arvell Reese with the No. 5 pick. The Giants insisted that they were not looking to trade Thibodeaux, but they did have a few interactions that revealed what they would have wanted for him.
While negotiating with the New Orleans Saints , the team most interested in the Oregon alum, the Giants reportedly wanted a second-round pick for Thibodeaux, according to Dan Duggan of 'The Athletic.' New Orleans was not willing to go any higher than a fourth-rounder, which led the discussion to fade.
Thibodeaux seemingly alluded to a trade during the NFL Draft, but nothing ever came to fruition. He remains in East Rutherford to begin year five, at least for now.
Thibodeaux is already the third wheel of the Giants' edge-rushing rotation, behind Pro Bowler Brian Burns and 2025 first-round pick Abdul Carter . Adding Reese to the mix seemingly dropped him even further, but the Giants are planning to use their No. 5 pick at inside linebacker and not as a full-time edge-rusher.
Thibodeaux, who is coming off a 2.5-sack season in 2025, will remain an integral part of the Giants' updated front-seven. New head coach John Harbaugh envisions a deep, four-man edge-rushing rotation, which also includes 2025 free agent signing Chauncey Golston , who had 5.5 sacks with the Dallas Cowboys in 2024 before failing to overcome injuries in 2025.
