Giants' Tony Vitello drops hilarious Drew Gilbert take with Rafael Devers admission appeared first on ClutchPoints . Add ClutchPoints as a Preferred Source by clicking here .
Through the first 28 games of his managerial tenure with the San Francisco Giants (13-15), Tony Vitello has proven himself to be an outspoken and endlessly passionate leader . Following a rocky start that put the 2024 national champion under the microscope, the team is starting to find its rhythm. Vitello is still keeping his players on their toes, however. Just ask Drew Gilbert .
While discussing a clutch sixth-inning Rafael Devers double after Sunday's 6-3 comeback win over the Miami Marlins , the former Tennessee Volunteers skipper could not resist taking a shot at his 25-year-old outfielder.
"(Devers puts} such a pretty swing out that Drew punched me and said 'that's the swing'… then Drew goes up there and almost takes the identical swing," Vitello said, per KNBR. "He's just not as good as Rafi so it didn't go as far."
Before panic starts to rise in the Bay Area, it is important to remember that Gilbert spent three years playing for Vitello in Knoxville. They are very close and have presumably earned the right to engage in some good, old-fashioned ribbing. The 2022 first-round draft pick is probably feeling just fine after notching the game-tying single.
Gilbert, who was acquired in a 2025 trade with the New York Mets , is starting to come into his own during his first full MLB season. He is batting .265 with two home runs, a .306 on-base percentage, .441 slugging percentage and .747 OPS in 37 plate appearances. While his ceiling might not be as high as that of a two-time Silver Slugger, the left-handed hitter is still teeming with promise.
Tony Vitello is counting on both Rafael Devers and Drew Gilbert to deliver at the dish, for he knows what their continued productivity can do for a Giants lineup that is often considered incomplete. Expect the first-year MLB manager to maintain his blunt approach when San Francisco visits the last-place Philadelphia Phillies (9-19).
