Denver Broncos general manager George Paton is entering the final year of his contract, and coach Sean Payton has two years remaining on his contract. Payton has said an extension for Paton is " overdue ," giving a strong endorsement to the team's GM.
During his end-of-season press conference in January, Broncos owner/CEO Greg Penner was asked about Paton's expiring contract. He was also asked if he'd like to align the lengths of the contracts for his GM and coach.
"Well, first of all, I'd say that the two of them, we'd love to have both of them here long term," Penner said. "I think the partnership they've created and how they work together, it's very complementary. In terms of their contracts, those are things that we'll always deal with on a personal basis in private and take that as it comes."
Teams often make changes to scouting departments after a draft cycle, so it wouldn't be surprising to potentially see Paton's contract talks heat up in late April or early May following the 2026 NFL draft. Penner has indicated the team wants the GM and HC to stick around "long term," so it's reasonable to assume a deal will get done.
